Salvia caymanensis

This Salvia was thought to be extinct, until it was suddenly discovered in a garden in the Cayman Islands from where it originates, in 2007. The plant is small, about 12 inches tall, with tiny pale blue flowers. It is very neat, with many flowers on the numerous stems. Best grown in pots, perhaps in clumps of three, when it is very attractive, in a discreet way. Propagation is by seed, which germinates readily. It enjoys warmth, regular watering, and full sun. It can be grown as an annual, or as a short-lived perennial. An important collector's item. Photo courtesy of Annette Bax.
